A friendly debate about safety philosophy with Dylan Short? This should be fun.
On October 22, Dylan and I will be co-presenting Rethinking the Rulebook: HOP vs. Traditional Management Systems at the Canadian Safety Summit in Toronto.
HOP has challenged some long-held assumptions about human error, blame, learning, and how we design safer systems. At the same time, traditional safety management systems have been the foundation of workplace safety for decades, providing structure, accountability, and clear expectations.
So, is one approach better than the other? Are traditional systems too rigid? Does HOP actually improve safety outcomes? Or is there more common ground between the two than we sometimes acknowledge?
Dylan and I will take on different perspectives in a friendly debate exploring the strengths, limitations, and misconceptions surrounding both approaches. I've known Dylan through the safety conference circuit for some time and I can't think of a better person to share the stage with for this discussion.
If you're attending the Canadian Safety Summit, come join us. This should be an interesting one.
